In contrast to the generous and genuine behavior of the new church in Jerusalem, exemplified by Barnabas, we now see the example of Ananias and Sapphira, who attempted to deceive the Lord by their sale of land and donation of a portion of the price, claiming it was the whole. We examine:

• The sin of Ananias and Sapphira.
• The charge made against them.
• Their death and its purpose.

We are challenged by this account to examine our lives for sins of pride, covetousness and hypocrisy. Unbelievers are particularly called to turn from their sins, understanding that God’s judgment for sin can come very suddenly, as it did with this couple.
