This passage provides encouragement as we face difficulties in this life caused by sin, and as we encounter persecution through being made more like Christ.

We have already seen much in this chapter concerning the ministry of the Spirit of God within us, and we know that Christ intercedes for us in heaven. Here we discover that in our weakness and our inability sometimes to know how to pray or what to pray for, the Holy Spirit causes us to groan deeply and in a way that is beyond our words to express. Our Father in heaven understands the mind of the Spirit, whose intercession for us is in accordance with the will of God.
