Jesus denounces the cities in which most of His miracles were performed - Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum. The latter receives special attention because it is the place where Jesus also made His home. In these very solemn words, we see the following:

  • There are degrees of punishment in Hell for sin: those who sin more here and do not repent can expect more punishment in eternity.
  • The same sins are more or less culpable depending on the spiritual light sinned against. Thus Capernaum will find it less tolerable even than the notoriously wicked city of Sodom on the Day of Judgment because Capernaum rejected the teaching and miracles of Christ Himself and so sinned greatly against such wonderful light.

Unbelievers are warned of these things and encouraged to respond to the light they have received and not to reject it. Believers are exhorted to be thankful that in them the light has borne fruit leading to eternal life, and to witness to others of the truth of the Gospel.
