The relation of good works to salvation has always been an issue of contention. Here we see how the views of James and Paul in the Bible harmonize perfectly and a call is issued both to believers and unbelievers. God has given believers His Word, a conscience and the Holy Spirit to enable them to produce fruit that is in keeping with the repentance that is theirs in Christ. Unbelievers have the Word also, and a conscience (largely uninformed by the Word and the Spirit). We see that no ‘good’ works of an unbeliever can ever be pleasing to God, and that they must first have saving faith that can serve as a reservoir from which true good works may flow.
