We examine the separation that occurred between Paul and Barnabas as they contemplated the second missionary journey. We see:

  • The circumstances surrounding their disagreement
  • The disagreement itself
  • The resolution to the disagreement

We are challenged by this sad account and by our Lord’s clear desire for unity in the Church to be peacemakers, seeking to build up the Body. We realize that there was not necessarily any animosity between Paul and Barnabas, even though their disagreement meant they parted company. Paul speaks highly of Barnabas in letters he wrote after this event, regarding him as a brother in the Lord.
