In the final petition of the Lord’s prayer we are taught to pray that we not be led into temptation but instead that we be delivered from evil. The first part of this petition would be amazing were it not for our understanding of God’s sovereignty. God is able to lead or not lead us into temptation as He wills (though He does not tempt anyone). It is to this sovereign God that we are to pray that we not be led into temptation. But we also must seek with wisdom to avoid temptation. In the second part of this final petition we pray that we would be delivered from evil. Our sovereign God is able to perform this, but it is better to pray this before our flesh and temptation have joined hands against us. We may be prepared in advance by holy living.
