The greatest of all the evidences we can give that we are true believers is that we love Christ more than anyone or anything else. We see:

  • What this means in terms of relations with members of our earthly family.
  • What it means in terms of our affections for the things of this world.

We see that anyone who does not love Jesus first and foremost is not worthy of Him. This does not mean that we can ever make ourselves worthy, because salvation is all of God’s grace. It does mean, however, that people in this condition have grounds to question if they are believers at all.

We also see that anyone who does not die to self and willingly accept the persecution that comes from following Christ is not worthy of Him.

We ask how we can love Christ most of all and see that if we are believers, this love is already in us but we need to love Him more. However if, on examining our hearts, we do not see this love for Christ, we need to come to Him and ask Him to give us this love, without which we shall perish eternally.
