Jesus tells a story to indicate the hypocrisy of the Scribes and Pharisees - they appeared to agree with God in all their words but disobeyed Him in their actions.

We are warned against this sin ourselves: it is not enough for us to say we are Christians - we will be judged on the Last Day by the things we have done that show our words are true.

Christians are encouraged to come to Christ to gain the strength they need to overcome any tendency to hypocrisy in their lives. Unbelievers are brought face to face with the consequences of a life that is full of words about God and even beliefs about Him but lacking any works that are the fruit of true repentance and forgiveness.
