Israel had sinned against God and now its capital city, Samaria, was under siege to the Arameans. Elisha the prophet is in the city and foretells a wonderful deliverance from God. This is subsequently discovered by a group of lepers who initially keep the news to themselves but ultimately proclaim it to the beleaguered city.
We examine the ways in which this episode pictures for us the horror of the sinful state of the world, the salvation that Christ has procured and the responsibility given to God’s children to proclaim this deliverance. We also consider how we may fall into the trap the lepers discovered, by feasting ourselves on the good things God provides but not announcing them to those who are still in desperate need in the world.
