In some of the most frightening words that Jesus spoke, He indicates that there is a sin which can be committed for which there can be no forgiveness - either in this age or in the age to come. We look at the following questions:

  • Exactly what is this unpardonable sin?
  • What are its characteristics?
  • Who can and who cannot commit this sin?

We see that those who are truly believers can never commit this sin. Those who are not believers but are concerned about their spiritual condition and that they may have committed this sin probably haven’t.

We are all comforted to see that this passage does speak of true forgiveness for many sins. But unbelievers are urged to come to Christ now, so they may know that they will be preserved forever from sinning in this way. Furthermore, if unbelievers remain such to the end of their days but avoid this sin, their eternal destiny will be the same as if they had.
