Continuing our survey of Flavel’s work on the marks of grace in the true believer, we consider how people react to sin in their lives, drawing out a contrast between the believer and the unbeliever in five different facets of their reactions under the trials of indwelling sin:

  • The first is abstinence: Why do we abstain from sin?
  • The second is hatred of sin: Do we hate sin as sin?
  • The third is sorrow for sin: If we grieve for it, why do we?
  • The fourth is refusal to submit to sin: How do we respond to the temptations of sin?
  • And the fifth is opposition to, and conflict with, sin: Why do we oppose it and is our opposition universal?

As always, our prayer is that we may search our own hearts and discern our condition before the Lord.
