Using very strong language, James points to the root cause of the conflicts and the divisions in the church, the bitter jealousy and selfish ambition he has been talking about. The cause is spiritual adultery - turning away to one degree or another from the husband, Jesus, to whom they were betrothed as believers.
We examine what James tells us concerning the symptoms of this adultery and what it is in essence, before we hear some comforting words concerning the heart of God towards us even in our adulterous condition.
We are urged to return to our husband with our whole heart and to turn away from the world and its enticements, which can never satisfy us. Unbelievers are also called to leave this empty world and to be married to Christ, the only hope of their salvation.
