Many times in the Scriptures, the people of God are called upon to remember what they were before God rescued them. We see that this activity is an important one for living the Christian life.

We look at what we were before we knew Christ - both from a human and a Divine perspective and we discover that God chose to save the lowest of the low so that no-one would be able to boast in His presence. We marvel at His love and grace in saving those who had nothing to commend them but plenty to condemn them.

Believers are urged to live their Christian lives in the light of what they were - not to think too highly of themselves and to esteem others better, showing them the same kind of love with which they are loved by God.

Those who never came to Christ are called upon to humble themselves, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
