Having outlined the two opposing forces that are at work in the life of a believer (the flesh and the Spirit), Paul now lists some of the deeds that arise from the flesh and gives a clear warning of the consequences of a life that displays only those deeds. In this key lesson that focuses on practical means to become more holy, we see:

  • What the works of flesh are.
  • How to fight the works of the flesh.
  • What the consequences are of not fighting.

We are encouraged to examine our lives and search them for these deeds of the flesh, to repent of them and to seek God’s grace to resist them out of a correct motivation. Although this is a very sobering lesson, it is vital for furthering our walk with Christ.
