Taking a break from our series in Matthew, we look at the second letter to the churches in Revelation 2. The church at Smyrna was knowing great tribulation and there was more to come. We look at

  • The nature of the trials they faced
  • The comfort that Christ gives the church through the letter
  • The application to us today

We note the stark contrast between the message of Scripture and the false teachings today that Christians should be prosperous in this world and should know no sickness or affliction. We also see that the purpose of the letter was to get the believers in Smyrna to look to the age to come, rather than to the here and now. In this way, they and we can find the courage, strength and grace we need to face suffering, affliction and poverty in this world.
