Paul’s grief is palpable as he reviews all the privileges and blessings which the Jews had been given and yet which many of them had ultimately rejected. Yet he loves them and desires their salvation, even (were it possible, which it isn’t) at the cost of his own soul and in spite of their hatred for him. Here is Christlike love. Christ Himself became a curse for His people, to secure their salvation. Christ was separated from God to purchase redemption for the elect. Christ calls us to have this same love in our hearts for one another, for our family members, neighbors and those in our churches.
