We conclude our series in the book of Genesis by seeing Jacob and Joseph dying old and full of years - a mark of God’s blessing. Both demonstrated by their final remarks that they were looking forward to the fulfillment of God’s promises, and the writer to the Hebrews confirms this for us. We are encouraged not to live for this world but to look forward ourselves to the fulfillment of God’s promises to us in the new heavens and the new earth, where righteousness dwells.

The example of these two men is contrasted with the lack of faith in God’s promises which Joseph’s brothers demonstrated after Jacob’s death. We are comforted to know that even our sins, though our responsibility and an offence before God, are used by Him to our ultimate good.
