When He answered the rich young ruler’s question about how he was to inherit eternal life, Christ told him that he was to keep the commandments. This sounds legalistic to most readers of this passage but we need to realize that this is true. Only those who have perfect righteousness will enter heaven. We understand that it is only in the righteousness of Christ that believers will be able to stand on the Last Day, but we know that we must also have a personal righteousness as evidence of the work of sanctification in our lives. If we want to live we must keep God’s commandments.
