The events of this last week (the passenger planes flying into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York) cause us to ask why events like these happen. Is this something that God intended, and if so, what could His purpose have been?

We look at the events in Habakkuk’s day and see a close parallel to our own situation. God will often use nations to judge nations - sometimes even more wicked nations to judge less wicked ones. We review the sins in our own land that have been crying out to God for judgment and should cause us to mourn and to repent. But we also see that the acts themselves were cruel and wicked and should by no means go unpunished. Yet as believers we should pray to God for the repentance, as well as the just punishment, of the offenders.
