Matthew relates the manner in which Jesus taught the people about the kingdom to an Old Testament prophecy. This foretold that Jesus would teach the people in parables. We have already seen that Jesus used parables to hide the Truth from unbelievers, whilst revealing it to His People. As we examine this passage, we ask the following questions:

  • Why did God hide the Truth from some?
  • How did He do this?
  • How did He reveal the Truth to His people?

We are warned about the dangers of rejecting the Truth of God. As unbelievers, this may lead to the hardening of our hearts and make our condemnation certain. As believers, we may be allowed to sink into sin and be made to feel our utter need of God to save us.

Looking at the context of the prophecy that Matthew quotes, we see how the whole history of Israel is a kind of parable of the glorious Kingdom of God. As we study this parable, we see Christ and all His work of redemption, if indeed we have eyes to see and ears to hear.
