We consider Paul’s extraordinary words as he comes toward the end of his life on earth. Reviewing all of his qualities and experiences, we are struck that he puts them all behind him, concerned only to press on and know his Savior better.
In contrast, we realize that we often do not have this hungering and thirsting after the Lord to the same extent. We are very prone to put confidence in the flesh and are easily satisfied with very little in the spiritual realm.
Those who have no desires after Christ are called upon to see if they are believers at all. Those with little desire for Him are encouraged to follow Paul’s example in this passage and to strain forward to know Christ better. It is through exercise that appetite is strengthened!
