In a short break from our series in Romans (but not unrelated to it) we look at the words of Joshua to the people of Israel just before his death.

He reminds them of all the blessings of God that He had given to Israel in bringing them our of Egypt and into the promised land. Then he gives them three things to do if they would persist in knowing the blessing of God:

  • To obey God in all the things He had commanded them
  • To cling to Him and not let go - and not run after the idols of the nations around them
  • To love Him diligently and persistently with all their hearts

These things are impossible to the natural man but made possible to us through the work of Christ and His grace in our lives.

In contrast, we see the punishment that awaited Israel if they would not do these things and we see that these things still apply to any who would fully forsake the Lord and His Gospel - not a temporary lapse but a full parting from Him and enmity against Him.
