Returning to our series in the Shorter Catechism, we examine the 5th Commandment. We see how and why we are to obey our parents and that the Lord confers a blessing on those who keep this command. We understand that this commandment applies both positively and negatively - we must honor our parents and we must obviously do them no harm. We also see that the commandment applies to all authority that the Lord places over us. Provided we are not commanded to do anything contrary to God’s Law, we are to obey all the authorities instituted by God. The Bible teaches us this by referring to many authority figures in Scripture as ‘Father’ or ‘Mother’.

We see the examples of characters in the Bible and we are encouraged to obey this command with God’s help and to look to Him for the blessings of obedience.
