We consider another quality we need to possess if we are to be useful to the Lord: we need to honor the authorities that he has established. We see three things:

  • First, the basic principles of authority,
  • Second, the fundamental spheres of authority the Lord has established, and
  • Finally, the particular duties and responsibilities that pertain to each office.

We are to exercise authority within due bounds according to the sphere in which we possess it. Likewise, we must submit to the authorities that God has established since, in so doing, we are submitting to the Lord. When we rebel against duly established and correctly exercised authority, we are rebelling against the Lord, and quenching and grieving His Spirit.
