We see God reviving His people in this episode in the life of Jacob. First, God calls Jacob to return to the place where He had first revealed Himself to him. Jacob doesn’t merely obey but calls upon his household to get rid of the foreign gods among them. At Bethel, God renews the covenant and promises He had made first to Abraham, then Isaac and earlier at Bethel to Jacob. Jacob responds in faith, by setting up a pillar and confirming the name of the place as Bethel.
Again in this account we see the goodness and faithfulness of our God and we are encouraged to separate ourselves from the world and its enticements and to hunger and thirst after our God and His righteousness. Like Jacob and the saints of the Old Testament, we are looking forward to the glorious reality to which the promise, the types and shadows pointed.
