In the fifth petition of the Lord’s prayer we are taught to pray, ‘forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.’ Christ here commands us to seek forgiveness from God. This dispels any thought of perfectionism that we may have. But we are also commanded here and in the two verses that follow the Lord’s prayer to forgive others. For if we do not forgive others their sins our Heavenly Father will not forgive us our sins either. This is not to say that we are saved by forgiving others but instead that this is one of the strongest evidences that God’s Spirit of love is working in us.
