This passage highlights three religions that were present at the time of Christ and indicates the errors that both the Pharisees and the disciples of John were making with their religions. We look at the following questions:
We see again that true religion does not work for salvation but does good works arising from salvation already received.
Finally, we look at what Jesus means by the pictures of the wine and the wineskins and the patching of the old garment with new cloth. We see that Jesus did not come to patch up an old arrangement but to bring in something new. Likewise, all who follow Jesus must follow in this New Way. We are all encouraged to come to Christ to be made new so that we may follow Him.
