We see that the Gospel can bring about division even between members of a family. We explore how this comes about, and why this does not contradict the fact that Jesus came to bring peace on earth.

We especially focus on the application of this text in two areas:

  • As we grow up in our families and then come to know Christ - particularly looking back and seeking to understand difficulties we may have faced in our own lives
  • Looking forward to divisions that may yet arise in our families - we confront the possible situation that our children may not come to know Christ and then will be divided from us. Parents are urged to renew their family devotions and prayers for their children, since these are means which God is often pleased to use to bring unbelievers to Himself whilst children.

Finally, we are encouraged that as the children of God, we have been brought into a family from which we can never be cut off. In Christ, no matter what we may be called upon to give up in this world, we will know far more and better blessings in the age to come.
