A major issue of this time period was whether or not the King was above the law, or subject to it just like anyone else. Kings Charles I and II were both rulers who believed they were above the law and resisted those who threatened to remove what they saw as their ‘Divine Right.’ These disagreements would lead to the English Civil War and the further development of the Protestant movement in the United Kingdom.
