We move on to consider another phase in the History of Redemption: the time from the anointing of David as king, to the Babylonian Captivity. The Lord takes another step forward in the work of redemption as the time of Christ continues to draw near. We consider that David was not only an ancestor of Christ, but he was the greatest personal type of Christ in the entire Old Testament. We see two things:

  • Why we should believe that David was the greatest personal type of Christ.
  • How in establishing David’s kingdom, the Lord also established the kingdom of His Son.
We are challenged to reject this world’s assessment of people’s value on merely outward grounds and instead to become like David as he was like Jesus; a man of lowly circumstances whom God exalted because his heart was wholly for the Lord.
