Isaiah prophesies a time of darkness and oppression for Israel, as they had turned away from God and were relying on men for their security, whilst they worshipped idols. Yet in the midst of the darkness that would come through the judgment God would send, a great light would shine.
We look at this wonderful prophecy of Christ and see Him as the light that came into the darkness. We see how remarkably the prophecy was fulfilled both in terms of the place where Christ would minister and in terms of His character.
Finally, we see that the way Christ was the light of the world was through preaching the Gospel - His office of Prophet. Once again we are exhorted to see that this work continues now through His people. We are to be the lights in this dark world - the church is to be the lampstand and shine brightly with the good news of the Gospel. We are encouraged to seek God for the grace to be those lights that will shine for His glory.
